Top 5 Ways to Keep Cool at the Disneyland Resort

Posted August 05, 2013 by Melanie Vogel

I could go to the Disneyland Resort every day and not tire of any of its magical experiences. I will admit, however, that going during summer months can be a bit exhausting when temperatures rise. With in-park temperatures typically ten degrees higher than Anaheim’s, finding a place to cool down and relax is necessary to get through warmer days.

Here are my top five ways to keep cool at the Disneyland Resort:

1. Cool Down on Water-and-Wait-Free Attractions
Though Splash Mountain in Disneyland and Grizzly River Run in Disney California Adventure Park (DCA) heed that “you will get wet,” there are several attractions that offer a cool-down sans the water or wait times. The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Soarin’ Over California and Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! in DCA and Haunted Mansion, “it’s a small world” and Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland all offer mostly-indoor queues and lengthy and entirely interior rides. Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, across from Grizzly River Run in DCA, and the Golden Horseshoe and Innoventions in Disneyland also offer excellent locations to rehydrate and relax.

2. Enjoy Tasty Treats and Cool Cocktails
Aside from grabbing a frozen on-the-go treat at any of the Resort’s numerous outdoor vending carts, taking a few minutes to enjoy an ice cream is a great and tasty way to cool down. Ghiradelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop (Pacific Wharf), Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream (Buena Vista Street), Cozy Cone Motel (Cars Land) and Paradise Pier Ice Cream Company (Paradise Pier) in DCA and Disneyland’s Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor (Main Street, USA) and Golden Horseshoe (Frontierland) all offer delicious ice cream cones, sundaes, floats and/or shakes. Frozen slushes are also available throughout both parks. Blogger’s tip: For an adults-only cool-down, cocktails and relaxation are served at the Hearthstone Lounge in the lobby of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa

3. Splash in Princess Dot Puddle Park
Located across from Flik’s Flyers inside a bug’s land in DCA, Princess Dot Puddle Park is the perfect place for little ones to splash and play while mom and dad relax on a nearby bench. Here, two giant garden hoses (as you’ll be the size of a bug) and ground geysers spray water for a perfect place to cool off. Blogger’s tip: be sure to bring a change of clothes for little ones so they aren’t wearing wet clothes all day.

4. Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular!
Inside Hollywood Land in DCA, Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular! is a 45-minute show housed inside the air-conditioned and incredibly comfortable Hyperion Theater, and as the name suggests, is spectacular. Adults laugh along as Genie makes references to pop culture and kids watch in awe as Aladdin and Jasmine act out favorite scenes from the film. Blogger’s tip: Be sure to arrive 15-20 minutes before show time to ensure there’s room to sit. Also, the show doesn’t run every day, so be sure to check the Entertainment Guide for availability.

5. Peruse the Animation Building
Also in Hollywood Land, the Animation Building houses the Animation Academy, Sorcerer’s Workshop, Turtle Talk with Crush, Character Close-Up and the incredible Animation Courtyard. Here, imagination and wonderment take over as guests gaze upon the process of animation while staying cool inside the air-conditioned building. Blogger’s tip: Devote at least an hour to spend here. There is plenty to see and do without having to spend time waiting in lines. Also, don't miss the Toy Story Zoetrope in the Character Close-Up -- it's amazing!
