2014 Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race

Posted April 21, 2014 by Amy Taylor

The Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race is an annual event where participants race 125 nautical miles from Newport Beach, California to Ensenada, Baja California. It is the largest yacht race in the world, with an average of 400-500 boats competing each year!

What began as a just-for-fun race for sailors coming out of World War II in 1948 has grown into a well-known event that even celebrities like Vicki Lawrence, Humphrey Bogart and Walter Cronkite have participated in over the years. Along the way, racers get to see views of mountains meeting the sea and Mexico's wine country; not too shabby, if you ask me.

This year marks the 67th anniversary of the race and to celebrate, there will be plenty of festivities for sailors and spectators alike. The fun began on April 13 at Balboa Village, home of the Fun Zone, with live musical, nautical displays, art exhibits and food samplings. Plenty more festivities will come before the race concludes on April 27 in Ensenada.

Even if you aren't participating in the race, there are several ways you can be involved in celebrating this annual, historical event! Here's what's coming up:
